TRYOUT NEWS AND NOTES (UPDATED 4/19/2018)

As the organization moves forward in our planning for the 2018-19 hockey season, the MLHA Board has decided to adjust how we select players for our top teams in certain age groups.  Beginning this Spring, we will adjust the team formation process to a birth year model at the 2004, and 2005 birth years.  We may also develop additional birth year teams in those age groups, the decision will be dependent on the numbers of players we have in each age group, and more importantly the goal of ensuring that players of similar ability would be grouped together on MLHA teams.

Our AA team selection at the Pee Wee (U12) and Squirt (U10) will not change from previous seasons, meaning all 2006 and 2007 birth year players are welcome to try-out for the Pee Wee AA team, and all 2008 and 2009 birth year players are welcome to try-out for the Squirt AA team.   After further consideration and feedback from our membership we believe as an organization that these pre-body checking levels benefit from playing as an age group, not a birth year specific model.  As players graduate to body-checking divisions we will endeavor to move kids into a birth-year model

The plan for 2018-19 is as follows in terms of top teams at each age group:

  • 2004 Birth Year Team
  • 2005 Birth Year Team
  • Pee Wee AA – 2006 and 2007 Birth Years
  • Squirt AA – 2008 and 2009 Birth Years

This changes we made have been debated by our organization’s leadership for several years, and we now believe we have enough kids in the body checking divisions in our organization to make competitive and balanced teams based on birth year.  We are excited about this step and feel the benefits listed below illustrate the rationale for this change in operating procedure.

  • More consistent physical and emotional maturity
  • Better alignment of non-PAHL games
  • Better alignment with Pee Wee AA and above tournaments
  • The ability to keep groups of kids together for multiple seasons, enhancing team development
